WhatsApp’s latest update includes a significant privacy-focused feature: the inability for users to take screenshots of others’ whatsapp profile pictures. This move aligns with WhatsApp’s ongoing efforts to bolster privacy features within the app. While not officially announced by Meta or WhatsApp, the update was identified by The Android Police.
The implementation of this feature varies across devices. Some users receive a message stating “Can’t take a screenshot due to app restrictions,” while on other devices, the profile picture appears blank after an attempted screenshot. Our own testing resulted these findings, with both beta and stable versions of the app yielding the same result: an inability to capture screenshots due to app restrictions.
Despite these limitations, users may still find workarounds such as using another device’s camera or accessing WhatsApp via desktop. Nevertheless, this update marks a positive step forward for WhatsApp in prioritizing user privacy.
Additionally, this feature distinguishes WhatsApp from its competitors like Signal and Telegram, which lack similar profile picture screenshot blocking capabilities, despite their claims of prioritizing privacy.
